What brings you here today??

Practically one of the very first questions you may get asked by a therapist. So why seek therapy now?

The main reason people decide to see a psychologist is because they’re experiencing a form of behavioral and/or emotional dysregulation. Dysregulation is any form of behavior or emotion that is too intense and difficult to manage. We all have moments in our days when we feel dysregulated - trying to cook dinner, while the baby is screaming and the phone is ringing can make us all feel dysregulated.

However what brings most people to therapy is usually an ongoing and unmanageable state of dysregulation. Behavioral dysregulation can be doing things we know we shouldn’t be doing (too much time on social media, compulsive shopping, drinking too much, fighting with our spouse). It can also be NOT doing things that we know we should (exercising, self-care, treating others nicely).

Emotional dysregulation can be anything from ongoing feelings of dissatisfaction, lack of purpose and a sense of loss, right through to intense feelings of sadness, anxiety and anger.

If you are experiencing ongoing dysregulation which you’re finding difficult to manage, consider seeing a psychologist.
